Maltesers

Oh it’s hilly in Malta!!! We left the port of Valetta in darkness and of course on the right side of the road which is the left … Choosing to stick to the back roads rather than the main ones to get to our apartment for the week. Hilly doesn’t cut the mustard! I’d not like to take a car up some of the roads and we both had to push Tilly up quite a few too. No way could I move her on my own! But, Tilly settled into her underground parking for a long rest and to nurse her now very slipping rear sprocket whilst we hauled our bags up 3 flights of stairs as the lift was...

Long lost cousins

Now you all know the Reeds are a bit weird, but did you know we have a female relation who worked at Bletchley Park in the war and had a secret love child with a Canadian Officer? No, nor did we until a few years ago and as the first time we met this lovechild was at the funeral of his mother the Code breaker we thought we’d stop in to say hello to him again at his home in Miramar Beach. We had planned to stay a couple of nights but stayed for 6 with my cousin Rob and his English wife Joy. They live on a gated estate that has a huge golf course running through it, lakes, restaurants...

Another world

Leaving our WarmShowers hosts we set off toward Lake Okeechobee to find the first 10km were on the main dual carriageway with tiny a shoulder. But he was very polite about it! So we lit up the tail flashing rear light...

The East Coast

We only spent one day on the East Coast and despite cycling all day hardly passed any public beaches or coffee shops. The place is lined with enormous mansions – more like palaces (apparently Trump has one here) , with immaculate gardens tended by a small army of gardeners, and, in places, guarded by armed guards. Occasionally there’s a group of highrise apartments or a retirement complex, all owning the beach too and you just don’t see the sea for miles. Along this whole stretch every single plant and blade of grass was manicured to within an inch of it’s life and it...

Weeeeeeeeeeee

It may have taken us weeks to get up the mountains but it only takes an hour to come down! Our morning climb up to the last pass was fortunately in the cool and by the time we reached the top we’d been passed by numerous members of the lycra or leather brigades (racing cyclists or motorbikers) all giving us the thumbs up. The road down was fantastic, numerous tight bends, sheer drops, broken crash barriers and a decline that made our brakes earn their keep, I loved it and Linda hated it! She doesn’t like sheer drops, so we spent half the descent on the wrong side of the road too...
