Time for a rest!

And we’re off…. Having had the chance to experience the traffic in Chennai first hand in multiple tuk tuks, we decided the best time to set off on our cycle seemed to be sometime before the invention of the tuk tuk! As this wasn’t an option we opted for getting up at 5.30 and leaving at sunrise, which turned out to be a good plan. The traffic was light and we managed to get out without any difficulty. But it’s hot work, even at that time in the morning and we’d drunk 2 x 750ml bottles of water by the end of the first 20km. The journey itself showed the huge gap...

What have we done!

Reassembling Tilly Suresh, owner of the best bike shop in the world! Lost its former glory… Kamwaadeswaa Temple Amateurs..!!  We saw one with 5 on! Market day Sugar cane juicing Our flight was almost empty, not even enough people for one per row, but pleasant and quiet and as we disembarked we asked each other “What have we done!”. Too late now though as we passed through another high security check on entering the airport – they obviously take security seriously here – the X ray guy was fast asleep! After we collected Tilly, Customs immediately pulled us...

All change

We arrived back at the airport Hotel after a wind assisted cycle that we’ve now done 3 times, feels a bit like being at home! We’ve been closely following the Corona Virus updates for Taiwan, where the CDC publish updates as they happen in English listing every case, where it originated, the contact tracing as well as how the person is being treated. Its excellent and gets 3 or 4 updates a day despite being one of the first counties to get the virus outside China and being only a few miles from the mainland and having direct flights to Wuhan there has so far only been a handful...

The last leg

Having navigated the hills we were now on the easy final fairly flat straight, though it would be better to describe it as the final wiggle and the coast continued its remarkable beauty as we headed back over the Tropic of Cancer posing for a few photos at the marker. Along the route we passed the Water Running Uphill park, where a stream appears to flow uphill. It was so convincing that Linda almost was convinced that physics was all wrong but it was an optical illusion. The hills ran steeply down toward the sea and the stream ran apparently uphill on these slopes. But the steepness of the...

Oops

The thing about having multiple weather apps is you have to make sure they all tell you the same thing in the same currency so to speak. So when we set off up up coast into the 27kph with 50kph gusts headwind and we found it some of the hardest cycling we’ve done, had we checked the weather app properly we’d have seen it was in Knott’s and not kph so the 27 became 50kph with 92kph gusts and that why it was so hard – and there we were thinking we are getting too old for all this! Still, it made the decision of wimping out about crossing the pass by Bicycle definitely...

The End of the road and Vampires

We were on the final stretch now southward to the most southerly point in Taiwan and the tropical playground of the country, commonly referred to as Kenting. The road down was pleasant with large numbers of fish farms and small villages and we made good progress. The hotels here are quite cheap and very good but we decided to up our game and stay at the H Hotel resort for one night and have the Resort Experience! That and the afternoon tea they advertised in their 360 degree restaurant! We booked the honeymoon suite (it is our 25th anniversary this year!!) And had a fabulous room overlooking...
